1. The published article
This is the exact article.html the pipeline produced — the 29-element page that would go live on the blog (brand styling, table of contents, Key Takeaways, the compliance notice before the body, FAQ, numbered Sources, and the machine-readable Article + FAQ data). Publishing is paused; nothing was sent anywhere.

3. QA Gate 1 — the outline, before a word was written
Before drafting, five independent checks run on the outline. This is where the system refuses to build on an unsupported claim. Each check reports how many items it looked at, how many failed, and out of how many (checked / failed / denominator).

4. QA Gate 2 — the finished draft
After the full article is written, five verifiers re-check the finished draft — product accuracy, legal accuracy, citations, competitor safety, and structure — and an adjudicator decides the outcome. 5. Claim-accuracy table — every claim, traced
This is the heart of the proof. Every checkable claim in the article is listed with: the single-source-of-truth it draws on (LEGAL-SSOT = the legal folder, PRODUCT-SSOT = the product catalogue, OEM-TECHNICAL = manufacturer spec sheets), the source's own words (“before”), the verdict, and how it was checked. “After” — our paraphrase — is the claim text itself in column 2.

7. Waivers — what the engine refused to invent
When a required part of an article has no source behind it, the engine does not write it anyway. It records a waiver: the element, the reason, and exactly which sources were checked and found empty. This is the rule that would have prevented the August 2026 incident — an element with nothing behind it is declared missing, never filled in with something plausible. Below is every waiver on this article, so the gap is a decision you can see and overrule rather than a silence you would have to notice.

8. Copied word-for-word? — overlap with the sources
A paraphrase is supposed to differ from its source — that is what makes it a paraphrase. This measures the opposite: how many of the article's words sit inside a run of 8 or more consecutive words that also appears, exactly, in one of the frozen sources the writer worked from. This is shown, never enforced. It cannot block or delay anything, because some overlap is correct — legal wording has to track the statute closely, and a model name or a torque figure has one right spelling. Read a high number as "go and look", not as "this is wrong".

# How a Common Rail Diesel Fuel System Works
A common rail system does one structural thing, and everything else about it follows. It
separates the job of making pressure from the job of deciding when and how much fuel to
inject. Once those two decisions are independent, the control system gets a say it never had
on a mechanically timed engine, and the hardware around the rail — pumps, lines, filters,
sensors — stops being plumbing and becomes part of the calibration.
What follows describes the architecture, the filtration and water handling that the
architecture assumes, what federal rules require the electronics to watch, and where the line
sits between maintaining one of these systems and modifying it.
## What a common rail system is
Common rail fuel systems revolutionize the diesel fuel injection process in modern engines, significantly improving performance, fuel economy, and emissions control.oem-09
Those three usually trade against each other, so it is worth asking why they moved together here.
The answer is that they were never really three separate problems. Emissions on a diesel are
largely a function of how fuel enters the cylinder — how much, how finely atomised, at what
point in the compression stroke, and in how many separate events. A system that can control
those variables precisely can cut soot and oxides of nitrogen and extract more work from the
same fuel at once, because all three depend on the same lever. What common rail delivered was
the lever.
## Where the fuel is held
In a common rail setup, diesel fuel is stored in a high-pressure rail that supplies fuel to each injector independently.oem-09
What matters about the rail is not its shape. It is what a shared reservoir at pressure lets the rest of the system stop worrying about.
This approach ensures a constant and consistent high pressure, allowing for precise control over fuel injection timing and quantity.oem-09
That is the whole idea in one sentence. Pressure and timing used to be the same decision, made mechanically. Here they are two decisions.
On an older mechanical system the pump both generated pressure and metered the shot, so
pressure rose and fell with engine speed and the injection event was whatever the pump's
geometry produced at that speed. A rail held at a commanded pressure takes engine speed out
of the equation. The pump's job becomes maintaining a target, the injector's job becomes
opening for a commanded duration at a commanded moment, and neither has to compensate for the
other.
## What the injectors do
At the heart of these systems are common rail injectors, which play a pivotal role in delivering precise amounts of diesel fuel to the combustion chambers.oem-09
Precision here has a specific meaning, and it is not only accuracy of volume. Because the
rail holds pressure independently, an injector can open more than once per combustion event —
a small pilot shot to soften the pressure rise, a main shot to do the work, and sometimes a
late shot used to manage the aftertreatment downstream. Each of those is a separate command
with its own timing and its own duration, which is a capability a mechanically metered system
cannot offer at all.
## What sits around the rail
The common rail injectors operate in conjunction with other fuel system components, such as fuel pumps, fuel lines, and filters, ensuring a clean and efficient fuel supply.
Theoem-09 filtration is not an accessory in that list. It is a precondition the rest of the hardware assumes.
Step back and the fuel system sits inside a larger requirement. To operate effectively and safely, the engine must continuously deliver air, fuel and lubrication to the cylinders.oem-13
## Why filtration is a precondition rather than an accessory
An injector that meters fuel to a fraction of a millisecond at very high pressure has
internal clearances measured in microns, and the fuel is the only lubricant those clearances
ever see. That is why the filter specification on a modern diesel is written as a number
rather than as a recommendation.
Ram's service literature specifies that the engine-mounted fuel filter must meet a 3 micron rating.
The chassis-mounted filter must meet a 5 micron rating.
Two filters at two ratings is a staged design rather than redundancy. The coarser element
takes the bulk of the contamination out on the way from the tank, and the finer one sits
closest to the injection hardware it protects. Fitting the wrong element in either position
defeats the staging even when the part physically threads on, which is why position matters
as much as rating.
Using a fuel filter that does not meet the manufacturer's filtration and water separating requirements can severely impact fuel system life and reliability.oem-35, oem-36, oem-37
That is the manufacturer stating the consequence in its own words, and it is the reason filter
choice on a common rail engine is not a place to economise. The failure it describes is not a
filter failure. It is injector and pump wear caused by particles the filter was supposed to
have stopped, and it presents as a fuel-system repair bill rather than as an obviously wrong
part.
The engine mounted filter housing is equipped with a No-Filter-No-Run (NFNR) feature.oem-37
A housing that refuses to let the engine run with no element in it is the same judgement
expressed mechanically. The manufacturer would rather the truck not start than have the
injection system see unfiltered fuel for even one drive.
## Water is the other contaminant, and it gets its own instrument
Diesel fuel is seldom completely free of water.oem-36, oem-37
That is stated as an ordinary fact about the fuel supply rather than as a warning about bad
fuel, and it is why a diesel filter assembly is really a filter and a separator in one
housing. Water does not lubricate, it corrodes, and at injection pressure it is capable of
damaging the same surfaces the filtration exists to protect.
Because water accumulates rather than arriving all at once, the system watches for it.
The Water In Fuel Indicator Light will illuminate when there is water detected in the fuel filters.
Ifoem-36, oem-37 water is detected in the water separator while the engine is running, or while the ignition switch is in the ON position, the Water In Fuel Indicator Light will illuminate and an audible chime will be heard five times.
The chime matters more than it sounds like it should. A warning lamp on a cluster full of
lamps is easy to ignore for a week; a lamp plus a repeated audible cue is the manufacturer
treating this as something to act on now rather than at the next service interval.
If the Water in Fuel Indicator Light remains on, DO NOT START the engine before you drain the water from the fuel filters to avoid engine damage.oem-36, oem-37
Upon proper draining of the water from both fuel filters, the Water In Fuel Indicator Light will remain illuminated for approximately 10 seconds.oem-36, oem-37
That ten-second lag is worth knowing, because it is the difference between a successful drain
and a needless second attempt. The lamp is not a live readout; it clears shortly after the
water is actually gone. A lamp that stays on well past that window is saying either that
water is still present or that the sensor circuit itself has a fault.
Do not drain the fuel/water separator filter when the engine is running.oem-36, oem-37
The reason is pressure. Opening any part of a high-pressure fuel circuit while the engine is
turning is a different class of hazard from ordinary maintenance, which is why the drain
procedure is written around a stopped engine.
## Why the architecture is built this way
In diesel engines, internal combustion results in expansion of high-temperature, high-pressure gases, which in turn move pistons, transforming chemical energy into mechanical energy.oem-13
Common rail did not change what combustion is. It changed how much say the control system gets over when and how it happens.
In addition, engine emissions, created as by-products of combustion, must be treated to meet global environmental standards.oem-13
Those two facts together explain the design. Combustion produces the work and the by-products
in the same event, so the only way to influence both is to influence the event itself. Precise
injection control is the upstream half of that and the aftertreatment hardware is the
downstream half. They were engineered as one system, which is why the fuel system on a modern
diesel is emissions equipment as much as it is a fuel delivery device.
Cummins invests in these technologies to meet stringent global emission standards and provide vehicles with optimal fuel efficiency and performance.oem-09
## What federal rules require the electronics to watch
Because the injection system is emissions equipment, its behaviour is not left entirely to
the manufacturer's discretion. The federal on-board diagnostic requirements for these engines
name the fuel system specifically and say what the diagnostics have to detect.
The OBD system must monitor the fuel delivery system to verify that it is functioning properly.
Theoem-14 OBD system must monitor the fuel system's ability to control to the desired fuel pressure.
Read those two together and the rail's central promise becomes a regulated requirement. The
system must hold a commanded pressure, and it must notice when it cannot. That second half is
why a failing high-pressure pump usually announces itself as a fault code well before it
announces itself as a breakdown at the roadside.
This monitoring must be done continuously unless new hardware has to be added, in which case the monitoring must be done at least once per drive cycle.oem-14
Continuous is the default and once per drive cycle is the concession, which tells you how
seriously the rule treats pressure control. The monitoring is not a periodic self-test bolted
on at the end of a cycle; it runs while the engine runs.
The rules then name the two things an injector actually decides.
The diagnostics must detect a malfunction of the fuel injection system whenoem-14 it cannot deliver the commanded quantity of fuel needed to keep emissions at or below the applicable thresholds.
They must also detect a malfunction when the system cannot deliver fuel at the proper crank angle, whether the injection timing is too advanced or too retarded.
Quantity and timing are monitored separately because they are commanded separately. That is
the regulatory acknowledgement of the same separation the hardware made: a rail that decouples
pressure from metering creates two independent variables, and each one earns its own
diagnostic.
## How far the architecture scales
Fuel Systems product lines support engine applications ranging from 6 to 78 liters.oem-09
Cummins offers solutions for a diverse mix of on-highway and off-highway applications including: automotive, industrial, powergen, construction, mining, and marine.oem-09
When one approach serves that much displacement and that many applications, it is usually solving a fundamental problem rather than a packaging one.
Cummins leverages over 80 years of fuel systems experience in its current operations, located in Columbus, Indiana; Wuhan, China; Phaltan, India; and Juarez, Mexico.oem-09
Manufacturing in four countries for applications from light trucks to marine engines is what
a mature component architecture looks like. The same basic decision — hold pressure centrally,
meter it locally — scales across an order of magnitude of displacement without being
redesigned each time.
## Where the hardware comes from, and where it goes
The remanufacturing business supplies fully reconditioned products for engine remanufacturing and field service needs.oem-09
That second sentence matters to an owner more than it looks. A reconditioned unit is a real option on this hardware, not a compromise you settle for.
We produce and remanufacture common rail and legacy fuel systems.oem-09
The same organisation that builds new injection hardware also rebuilds it, which is the
practical reason a reconditioned injector or pump can be held to the specification of a new
one. Remanufacturing is not salvage on components this precise. It is a controlled process
against the original tolerances, and for an out-of-production engine the alternative is often
no part at all.
## Where the technology is going
Cummins Fuel Systems is also developing fuel system technologies for alternate fuels including: natural gas and hydrogen engines as well as fuel cells and electrolyzers.oem-09
A fuel system group working on hydrogen and fuel cells is a signal about where the
engineering attention is moving, not a prediction about diesel disappearing. High-pressure
metering expertise transfers; the fuel it meters is a separate question.
## Where maintenance ends and modification begins
Replacing a failed injector or a worn pump with an equivalent part is maintenance. You are putting the engine back the way it was certified. That is most of the fuel system work that gets done, and nothing about it is legally complicated.
There is a formal version of that distinction, and it exists precisely because the boundary
is easy to cross without meaning to. The federal rules on rebuilding an engine open by naming
what they are for.
This section describes the steps to take when rebuilding engines to avoid violating the tampering prohibition in § 1068.101(b)(1)oem-15 .
A rulebook that treats rebuilding as an activity with a tampering prohibition next to it is
telling you where the edge is. Restoring the certified configuration is the safe side. The way
to end up on the other side is to rebuild the engine into a configuration it was never
certified in, and that can happen through a substituted part rather than through any
deliberate decision.
Upgrading is a different question with paperwork attached.
## The federal floor the whole question sits on
Because the fuel system is part of the certified configuration, the rules that protect that
configuration apply to it directly, and they are worth stating plainly before any discussion
of parts.
Under federal law, the prohibitions against tampering and aftermarket defeat devices are set forth in section 203(a)(3) of theoem-18 Clean Air Act, 42 U.S.C. § 7522(a)(3).
That prohibition reaches the part as well as the person who fits it, which is why a component
sold for a certified engine carries a legal question the same component sold for stationary
equipment does not.
Labeling a part "for off-road use only" does not legally protect the buyer or the seller if the part can be installed on a vehicle originally certified for on-road use.s-legal-gate, s-usa-regs
The federal enforcement position turns on what the vehicle was certified as, not on where the
owner says the truck is driven. A label describes intent; certification describes the vehicle,
and the rule is written against the vehicle.
Tampering can void manufacturer warranties if the tampering can be shown to have caused the failure.oem-17
Note the condition in that sentence, because it is frequently dropped. The consequence is not
automatic on the presence of an aftermarket part. It attaches where the modification can be
shown to have caused the failureoem-17 being claimed, which is a question of evidence rather than a
question of policy.
## Parts, upgrades and the law
California requires an Executive Order for emission-related parts sold in California.
The Executive Order number belongs to the part, not to the brand, so approval for one product tells you nothing about another.
Checking the number against the exact part is the only reliable test, which is why whether a
part is legal on a given truck is really a question about a part number and a jurisdiction
rather than about a manufacturer's reputation. A company with one approved product can sell a
dozen without one.

## The short version
Pressure is held in a shared rail. Timing and quantity are decided per injection event by an injector drawing from it. Everything else here follows from that one separation.
The practical consequences all sit downstream of it. Because the injector meters at very high
pressure, filtration and water separation are specified rather than suggested. Because
injection control is emissions control, the diagnostics that watch it are required rather
than optional. And because the certified configuration is the legal one, restoring the fuel
system is maintenance while changing what it does becomes a question about a part number and
a state.
